What This Blog is About

I first learned of meditation in the context of relaxation and focus when I was 16 and running 440 and cross-country. For the children in the audience, “440″ is “400 meters”. My coach, John Barnes, taught us to relax and focus just before races – to avoid burning energy with nervousness.

Later, while in the Air Force in SE Asia, I was exposed to more ideas and uses of meditation.

It was only recently that I encountered people who, it seems, need something to hate and consider meditation “un-Christian”. I don’t consider myself a Bible scholar, but I have read and studied enough to know that these people are badly mistaken.

This blog is about helping more people enrich their prayer-life through meditation. The blog’s sub-title is the first phrase of Psalms 46:10

Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth

A problem I and many others have is trying to “be still” when we pray. Days are usually filled and busy and when we stop for prayer, stopping the jabber in the back of our minds is tough. Those noises and thoughts and all aren’t just random.  the whisperer is there, lurking in the shadows trying to keep us from the closer walk we seek; trying to keep us from the inspiration and strength God offers.

I found a great poem on “Meditations”

Satan’s Sunday

He followed me to church that day,

slipped in beside me,

nudged and whispered,

wanted me to focus on the draught,

the wind that wailed outside,

the toddler’s ceaseless chatter,

its mother’s shhhh ! !

Or someone’s hacking cough.

And then I thought -

none of my business, Satan.

Oh, God, how well the Whisperer knows

the way to interpose and give us other-focus

than what we come for !

For what we want to see

is not these things,

but Jesus.

More on this thought at blindinglight “Satan is the whisperer – the prowler. He trys to seduce us, and tempt us – So much that is evil, initially seems appealing.”

And here at Christian Resource Center – Bermuda “Do Satan’s modern disciples still use the half-truth, gossip plan to weaken and destroy innocent people? Indeed, whisperers are still around, and their campaigns have destroyed more souls than all the military engagements fought on the battlefields of earth.”

And lastly Sermon Notes

Things that Hinder Hope It is God’s desire for us to see hope abound in us – to become people of hope. Let’s look at some things that help hope grow and some of the things that hinder hope from abounding in our lives.
Lies One of the things that I have found crushes hope in my life is when I find myself believing certain lies that deny certain aspects of God’s truth. One of these lies goes like this: As a child of God, as one who faithfully serves God, as one who lives a sacrificial life for Jesus, I should never have to suffer. This, brothers and sisters is a pervasive and subtle lie right from the pit of hell. Although there is ample evidence in the scripture to support the fact of God’s care for us and his provision for us and for his will for good health for us, there is much evidence that suffering is also part of the life of the believer. As evidence about how dangerous and diabolical this lie is, remember the time in Matt 16, just after Peter confessed Jesus as the Anointed One – God’s chosen? Jesus began to tell the disciples about how He was going to suffer and be killed. Do you remember Peter’s response? No not you Lord. And do you remember Jesus response? Get thee behind me Satan. Even though I know that this is a lie, it’s easier to believe when things are going well than when things are going bad. Satan, the whisperer will be right there -

You are suffering because you’re not really a Christian

If God is so loving, why is He letting this happen to you (or your family)?

We need to recognize these as straight from the pit and renounce them as such. If we entertain such lies, hope will be crushed.

So, that’s where I’m coming from and what this blog’s about. I hope to be of service to you.
